Ask the beach loving Brazilians where they would like to spend their holidays and most likely you will hear Santa Catarina. With a coastline of over 500km of gorgeous beaches, Santa Catarina has been a favourite summer destination for Brazilians and South Americans for many years. One of the reasons is that you are certain to find a beach to suit your taste. Santa Catarina Island in Florianopolis, for example, has alone more than 42 official beaches, from party hotspots to unspoiled nature reserves.

In the secluded bays of the Emerald Coast to the north of Florianopolis you can find the best diving in South Brazil as well as very exclusive and charming beach resorts.

The southern coast is recognized as the best surfing spot in the country. One of the highlights is Praia do Rosa, always ranking as one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil and famous for whale watching.

Besides relaxing by the beach, you can enjoy all kinds of nautical sports, in the sea and in the many lagoons along the coast. You will also find excellent places for walks in the rugged coastal cliffs and many nature trails.

For those after a more cultural holiday, the Portuguese colonial legacy is visible all along the coast, in special in the old town of São Francisco and in historical Laguna. In Florianopolis region, the Azorean influence is the strongest, making for a unique cultural and gastronomic experience.

The most popular places can be very busy in January and February but the mild climate on the coast will allow you to enjoy the beaches with hardly anyone around the rest of the year
