Driving in Brazil can be hair-raising sometimes, but in South Brazil road conditions are generally better. If you would like to explore the interior and your budget does not stretch to our private tours, self-drive itineraries are a very good option. On this suggested itinerary, driving mainly through the back roads, you will have the chance to experience the natural and cultural diversity of Santa Catarina. From the cosmopolitan capital, Florianopolis, to the German-influenced interior, from the mountain range of Serra Geral to Praia do Rosa, frequently chosen as one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil, you will experience the real Santa Catarina in a nutshell.
Day 1: Arrival at Florianopolis airport. You will be met by a guide that will help you with the car rental formalities and give you a road map and information about your itinerary. Pick-up car. Overnight at a local guesthouse.
Florianópolis the capital of Santa Catarina has a lot to offer. From colonial fishing villages to some of the most beautiful beaches of the Catarinense coast. It´s also a great base for outdoors activities such as rafting, trekking and all kinds of water sports.
Day 2: day free to explore the island of Santa Catarina and its 42 beaches and lagoons. Overnight at guesthouse by the beach.
Day 3: Florianopolis – Pomerode (172km -approximately 2h30min)
South Brazil, in special the northern part of Santa Catarina State, received a large influx of German immigrants in the middle of the 19th Century. In the region known as the European Valley, a number of small villages still retain the influence of its Germanic origins in the architecture, the local dialect and cuisine. The most well-known city is Blumenau, home to the Oktoberfest, a beer festival that is second only to Munich in number of visitors. A more authentic experience, however, is to be had in Pomerode, a small village nearby, which preserves its immigrant culture on hundreds of timber-framed houses and neat gardens.
You can drive or cycle around the “enxaimel route” (bikes are available for rent from the Tourist Office) in the rural side of the town, where you can see authentic early 20th Century “fachwerk”, the typical German timber-framed houses in the middle of neat tropical gardens. Back in town sample the local beer and food at the local micro- brewery Schornstein.
Day 4: Pomerode – Refúgio Rio Canoas, Urubici (280km - the last 30km in unpaved road approximately 4h30min)
Only a few hours inland from the coast you will be in the stunningly beautiful Serra Geral mountain range. With peaks reaching up to 1800m above sea level, this is the coldest part of Brazil. Having as a base a charming mountain lodge, you canexplore its lush canyons, pristine mountain rivers, waterfalls, and araucaria forests by foot and experience the culture of the highland gauchos.
Day 6: free for optional activities around the lodge.
Day 7 – Urubici – Praia do Rosa (130 km –around 56 km on dirt road through the scenic Corvo Branco mountain road – approximately 3h30min)
Praia do Rosa is frequently chosen as one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil and is part of the “Most Beautiful Bays of the World Club”. It is an ideal place to relax in quiet surroundings with beautiful views. Good coastal walks available in the vicinity of the guesthouse.
The region is also famous for surfing and, from July to November, it is an ideal base for whale watching.
Days 8 and 9: day free to relax or for local activities.
Day 10 – Praia do Rosa – Florianópolis airport (95 km- approximately 2 hours).
Return the car to Florianopolis airport.
